In a game lasting well over two hours, Greene County lost to the Carroll Tigers, 10-8 on Thursday night at Merchant’s Park in Carroll in non-conference high school baseball. Coach John Hupp’s team fell to 3-7 and they’ll try to get a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference win tonight at Allensworth Field in Jefferson when the Rams host Nevada.
The first inning alone took nearly 30 minutes to play as Greene County plated two runs and the Tigers scored three. The Rams went up 4-3 in the third, but Carroll scored five times in the bottom of that frame for a lead of 8-4. It was 9-4 after four innings, when the Rams made it 9-6 in the fifth. The game tightened to 9-8 in the sixth before Carroll added a sixth inning insurance run, then held the Rams off the board in the seventh.
Branden Hoyle took the pitching loss after going the first 3-2/3 innings. He allowed nine runs, all earned, on seven hits, six walks, and two hit batters. Hoyle struck out three Tigers. Joe Carey pitched in relief and gave up two hits and two walks. The run off him was unearned.
Eleven of Greene County’s 14 hits were singles, but Nick Breon doubled twice and David Richter added a two-base hit. Breon led the way with four hits. Joe Anderson, Carter Morton, Austin Delp, and Brent Riley were each credited with two hits, and Carey had one. Delp and Bryce Stalder each drove in two runs with one RBI for Breon, Anderson, Riley, and Richter.
Devin Baack hit a three run homer for Carroll.
