The Greene County High School softball and baseball teams both scored just one run last night in Jefferson vs. South Hamilton (Jewell) and both lost. It was the season opener for Coach Tom Kennedy’s softball team and the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference opener for Coach John Hupp’s baseball Rams. The Hawks won 10-1 in softball and 6-1 in baseball.
SH had six seniors in its softball lineup against eighth grade pitcher Emma Hoyle and eighth grade catcher Emma Stream. The Hawks (2-1, 1-0) scored twice in the first inning, once in the third, and seven times in the seventh. Hoyle went 6-2/3 innings and was relieved by senior Jenna Beyers. Beyers drove in the Rams’ lone run in the sixth with a single to make it a 3-1 game. Hoyle singled twice and Stream doubled to account for all the Greene County hits. The Rams struck out 12 times vs. winning pitcher Taylor Volkmann.
The Rams (2-1, 0-1) were down 4-0 after one inning at Allensworth Field. The home team managed just four hits off SH pitching with all four being singles. Tyler Teeples had two hits with Nick Breon and David Richter each getting one. Brent Riley had the lone run batted in. Riley went all seven innings on the pitching rubber. He allowed five earned runs on 11 hits, two walks, and one batter hit with a pitch. Riley had two strikeouts. The defense for Greene County was charged with five errors. Zeke Balderus had the pitching win for the Hawks (1-1, 1-0).
