Panorama junior Kolby Shackelford’s quest for a state golf championship looked good Thursday as he claimed the top spot on the leaderboard after day one of the Class 2A state tournament in Marshalltown.
Shackelford was the individual runner-up last year after finishing just one shot behind the champion. This time he sits three shots clear of the field after posting an even par 69 on the first 18 holes of the 36 hole tournament. Shackelford parred his first two holes before a bogey on his third. He would bounce back with birdies on the fifth and eighth to finish his first nine at 1-under. Back-to-back bogies on the 12th and 13th put him over par but he was able to finish with a birdie on his final hole to get back even.
As for the rest of the Panthers, sophomore Wyatt Appleseth finished the first round tied for 20th with an 11-over 80. Lucas Leiferman was tied for 39th with a 16-over 85, followed by Trey Cobb with an 87, Ryan Klinge shot 89 and Dylan Douglass posted a 93.
In the team standings Panorama sat in fourth place with a total of 321. Des Moines Christian was in first at 304. They’ll play another 18 today to determine the championship.
