Senior Awards Night at Greene County High School was held Tuesday evening. While it’s largely a time to present scholarships, the top athletic awards for the 2018-19 school year were also presented. Trey Hinote received the Bernie Saggau Award, with Melanie Doran being named Female Ram of the Year, and Bryce Hoyle the Male Ram of the Year.

The Saggau Award is named after the former longtime head of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, and it’s presented annually to the graduating student who best exemplifies a patriotic spirit, with strong religious and moral convictions, living and professing the qualities of honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship; believing that both games and life should be conducted by the rules. Hinote received postseason honors in both football and basketball, and he plans to continue his academic and basketball career at Dordt College in Sioux Center.

The Ram of the Year has been presented for 55 years. Athletically, Doran participated in a variety of sports during her high school years, and is perhaps best known for qualifying for the State Track & Field Championships on relays all four years.

Hoyle earned multiple All-State honors in football in helping Greene County make the playoffs, qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament, threw the shot put and discus in track & field, and played baseball up until this season. He plans on attending Buena Vista University in Storm Lake and being a member of the football team.
