While area residents are honoring those who died in military service this Memorial Day weekend, an upcoming event will highlight the deceased pioneers that helped shape a Guthrie County town.
The Casey Historical Society and Oakwood Cemetery Association are hosting their first-ever “Oakwood Cemetery Stroll” this Saturday from 3:30-5 p.m. Ten actors will be portraying notable Casey residents who were buried at the cemetery, with some of the volunteers being descendents of the historical leaders.
Casey Historical Society Board Member Judy Wedemeyer says the event was inspired by the research they did for the town’s sesquicentennial history book which will be sold in conjunction with the 150th celebration this summer, “So you know we had already been through a lot of the history of these families and discovered that a lot of them were buried at Oakwood Cemetery and thought, ‘Well this is a perfect opportunity for us to go ahead and showcase our cemetery.’ Kind of give people a little bit of an idea of the history that is in our cemetery, of the people that are buried there.”
Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under, and can be purchased at the door or in advance at Rolling Hills Bank or City Hall. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs and meet at the Casey Community Building at about 3:15 p.m. A shuttle bus will take people to the cemetery, and in case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the Community Building. Proceeds will go to the cemetery association and the historical society.
