Greene County starts the high school baseball season tonight against non-conference opponent Nodaway Valley in Jefferson with varsity playing at 5:30 p.m. vand JV to follow. The action was originally scheduled for Greenefield, but the sit has been switched to Jefferson and the varsity game is first.
It’s year two with John Hupp as head coach and Matt Paulsen as an assistant. The Rams were 14-13 a season ago, while the Wolverines were 11-14.
Greene County will be without four-year starter Austin Delp tonight as he’ll be playing Substate soccer in Grand Junction. Delp had a 3.53 pitching earned run average a season ago and batted .254.
Among the top returnees at the plate is junior Nick Breon. The shortstop hit .333 a season ago and struck out just nine times in 75 at-bats. Junior Tyler Teeples hit .328 as a sophomore and junior Brent Riley batted .254. Junior Carter Morton hit .357 in limited plate appearances last season.
Nodaway Valley graduated their top three pitchers from last year, but returns top hitter Tyler Vandewater, who batted .378.
