One of the events the Greene County boys’ track & field squad felt they could score points in on Thursday at the Coed State Championship at Drake Stadium was the long jump. Not only did junior jumper Colby Kafer score points, he finished as the Class 2A runner-up in the event, nearly knocking off the 2019 Drake Relays champion and pre-meet favorite Parker Kiewiet of Dike-New Hartford.

Following a slow start that saw Kafer foul in the prelims on two of his three attempts, he entered the finals in fifth place at 20′-9/12″. His three jumps in the finals went 21′ 5″, 21′ 5-1/2″, and a career best 22′ 6-1/2″. He passed Kiewiet with the sixth and final attempt, but the D-NH junior had the last jump of the competition and he made the most of it, winning with a leap of 22′ 10-3/4″. The second place finish was as well as the Rams have done in decades in the long jump, and equals their highest boys’ finish in several years.

Kafer also ran the prelims of the 200 meter dash about 15 minutes after receiving his long jump medal. He was sixteenth in the field of 24 in 23. 34 seconds.

Junnior Tyler Teeples ran the 100 meter dash prelims and did not make the final. He was fifteenth in 11.62 seconds.

The other Greene County boys’ event Thursday was the shot put with junior Tyler Miller finishing eighteenth with a best toss of 47′ 1/4″.

Junior Carter Morton competes in all four of his events today. He’ll high jump, run the prelims of the 110 meter high hurdles, then run the 400 meter low hurdles final, followed by the 4 x 100 meter relay prelims with Teeples, junior Brent Riley, and Kafer.

Miller throws the discus this morning.
