The U.S. House recently passed a bill that is aimed at helping Midwest farmers who were impacted by the mid-March floods.
The $19 billion legislation would provide relief to farmers who have suffered losses from hurricanes in the southeastern portion of the country to floods in the Midwest, rebuilding of southern military bases and helping provide additional aid to Puerto Rico. Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District Representative Steve King voted in favor of the measure, which passed 257-150 in the House. While King supported the bill, he thinks more needs to be done, especially with the U.S. Corps of Engineers.
“We have billions (of dollars) in damage that need to be restored by the Corps of Engineers, 41 breeches in the levy, just on the Iowa side of the Missouri River. We have also the future that we need to do, which is I think protect some of these cities that have been flooded. Build the kinds of structures that will protect the critical infrastructures up and the down the river bottom. We can’t keep it from flooding always, but what we can do is protect those critical infrastructures.”
King hopes the Senate will pass the House bill and that President Donald Trump will sign it into law.
