So far this spring, there have been several instances of house and structure fires in the Perry area.

With that in mind, Perry Fire Chief Chris Hinds offers some advice to prevent fires during the waning weeks of the spring season. “People have to use common sense. They have to stop and think before they go out and start doing something. You can’t go out on a windy day and expect to burn leaves. Just some common sense things that you need to stop and think about will go a long ways in preventing a fire or a hazard that might get completely out of control.”

One particular hazard that Hinds points out is an overheating lawn mower. If you are mowing the lawn on a hot day and run out of gas, he recommends taking a break and letting your mower cool down before filling the tank. He emphasizes that one errant spill can start your whole lawn mower on fire, and the fire could spread rapidly and inflict damage to your property. Finally, Hinds reminds people that yard waste burning is currently not allowed in Perry City limits, and that residents must wait until the fall open burning dates.
