The Greene County High School soccer teams both won by shut out on Saturday in Grand Junction vs. East Sac County (Lake View) in non-conference play. Coach Marilyn Tasler’s girls stopped a six-match losing streak and improved to 3-9 with a 4-0 victory, while Coach Carl Behne’s Class 1A sixth ranked boys won 8-0 to improve to 9-5.

The goals for the Greene County girls were a season high. They entered the contest with just five goals on the season and had been shut out eight times. Junior Ashlee Harmeyer scored less than two minutes into the first half and junior Kassie Lamoureux followed with a goal for a 2-0 lead at the half. Junior Aubrey Heupel scored twice in the second half. Coach Tasler said, “All the girls played aggressively, with Savannah Parker and Chloe Berns controlling the defense.” ESC fell to 0-9.

The Rams have two of the top 10 goal scorers in Iowa high school boys’ soccer and both had hat tricks (3 goals) on Saturday. Junior Gutierrez improved his state leader goal total to 36 and his state leading point total to 84, while Luis Velazco is tied for eighth in scoring with 22 goals. Greene County led 6-0 at the half and all 18 Rams suited for the contest had playing time. Coach Behne said freshman Nathan Black played 50 minutes in goal and had three saves, while junior Yunior Carballo played 30 minutes in goal and had one save. Regular goal keeper Cael Fisher is recovering from appendix surgery. The coach added, “Overall, a pretty good win, but we’re ready to get Cael back in a little less than a week and get our form and flow back.” ESC dropped to 4-7.
