A Greene County resident was recently recognized with an award through the Iowa State Education Association.

Retired educator and volunteer Jan Scharingson was selected to receive the ISEA Friend of Education Award. She was nominated for the award by teachers from the Greene County School District. Scharingson taught for 33 years in the former East Greene School District and has been a substitute teacher for 12 years.

When she’s not spending her retirement years subbing in the schools, Scharingson devotes her time to volunteering in various communities, including being an active member of the Bringing Optimism and Opportunities to Students and Teachers (BOOST) of Greene County. BOOST is a non-profit organization that supports Greene County School District teachers with supplemental funds for school items and educational trips. She has also served as a member of the Greene County Schools Foundation, Greene County Foundation, Congregate Meals Board, Horizons, Discussion Leader for Greene County Reads, and Grand Junction Housing Board, and as head of East Greene Alumni Association.
