A petition to have a special election to fill a vacancy on the Jefferson City Council has been submitted.
A petition with 65 signatures was submitted at City Hall last Friday. Thirty-two signatures were required to call for a special election. The petition was submitted ahead of today’s deadline, following the appointment made by the City Council at the April 23rd regular meeting. At the recommendation of Mayor Craig Berry, they appointed Darren Jackson to fill the vacancy, and he was then sworn-in this past Thursday.
City Clerk Diane Kennedy says the earliest the Council could consider calling for a special election and setting the date is at their next regular meeting on May 14th. The earliest date the election could be held is June 18th. Whoever is elected would then serve out the remaining term which would be through 2021. Jackson will remain on the Council until the special election. The estimated cost for a special election is $4,500.
