Greene County had two individual champions at Thursday’s Heart of Iowa Activities Conference track & field meet in Nevada. Sophomore Brianna Osterson won the girls’ long jump at 16′ 9-1/2″ and junior Carter Morton won the high jump for boys at 6′ 4″.
The Rams were sixth among eight girls’ teams and seventh among eight boys’ squads. The boys were without junior Colby Kafer, one of their top performers, due to a groin injury. Coach Chad Morton withheld the long jumper/sprinter with the May 9 State Qualifying Meet in Panora just under one week away.
Gilbert won the girls’ team title with 180.5 and PCM (Monroe) was second with 109.5. North Polk (Alleman) had 104, followed by Nevada 103, South Hamilton (Jewell) 74, the Rams 68, Roland-Story (Story City) 66, and 26 for Saydel (Des Moines).
NP and R-S each scored 137 points to tie for the boys’ title, and Nevada was a close third at 129.5. SH had 90 points, with PCM at 85, Gilbert 70.5, Greene County 66.5,and Saydel 18.5.
The Greene County girls had four runner-up finishes, including sophomore Brooklyn Olson in the discus throw at 118′ 7″. The sprint medley relay was second in 1:56.71 with junior Paige Heaning, junior Maddy Sigler, sophomore Makala Kafer, and Osterson. The 4 x 100 was second in :52.48 with Sigler, Melanie Doran, Kafer, and Osterson, and the 4 x 200 was the runner-up in 1:51.90 with Doran, Kafer, Sigler, and Osterson.
The Rams had three second place finishes for boys. Junior thrower Tyler Miller scored second place points in the shot put at 47′ 5″, and in the discus throw at 146′ 2″. Morton was second in the 110 meter high hurdles in 15.81 seconds.
The regular season is over with only the postseason left, starting with the Coed State Qualifying Meet on May 9 in Panora.
