Summer is always a busy time at the McCreary Community Building in Perry, particularly in the pool. With that in mind, the Perry Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a lifeguard training course.

Aquatics Director Kami Kirchner says there’s still some space available for the three-day training, which will allow participants to work at any municipal pool including Perry’s. She says it’s a lot of work, but emphasizes it’s all worth it in the end. “So we have a lifeguard class coming up this weekend, it’ll be Friday, Saturday, Sunday. It’s an all-weekend deal, but it usually goes pretty quick. I try to get us through it because it can be a long day, but we try to have fun and get through it together!”

Kirchner adds, she also has a lifeguard recertification class coming on Saturday, May 18th at 10 a.m. She points out that certification lasts for two years, so she encourages anyone nearing the end of theirs to sign up. Additionally, Parks and Rec will hire lifeguards who complete the training, and Kirchner says if they are employed for six months the class fee will be refunded to them.
