Families in and around Redfield can enjoy a new outdoor attraction near the Raccoon River Valley Trail.
The Redfield Development Corporation Committee has opened a new park located southeast of Armstrong Street. The yet-to-be-named park features a “StoryWalk” which will display a different book every six weeks from May through October. Children can walk down the rock path and read this month’s book, “Diary of a Worm,” and engage in activities along the way. The committee is also working with the West Central Valley Middle School to feature a history piece the students plan on writing this spring.
Committee member Tiawny Meyers says they select books from the Redfield Public Library, “We choose a book in the fall and then write the publishers to get a copyright for it because we do copy the pages and then create our storyboards. And so what a great activity to do as a family, as individuals, as kids and then again engaging our middle schoolers. That’s another group that maybe wouldn’t have participated or gone down there but now that brings in another age range between the middle schools and then their families as well.”
At the end of each StoryWalk will feature a post promoting events in the Redfield community. Meyers says the park is a labor of love, as the committee continues to apply for grants for further improvements. The committee is currently working on creating a natural playscape area, and hope to add restrooms and other amenities in the future.
