Two brothers visited their hometown of Panora Wednesday, but this wasn’t an ordinary trip.

Army veterans Jeff and Rick Harrison walked through Guthrie County on their way from Naples, Florida to Seattle, Washington for dad. Not just their father though, a veteran who recently passed away, but to also raise awareness for those who suffer from dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression.

The walk began in January, and during their travel they’ve gotten waves and honks from passersby, escorts from law enforcement agencies, and free meals and lodging from those who’ve learned their story. They’re also raising funds for mental health, as Rick explains, “The money we’re raising we’re going to use it for veterans that don’t have the insurance to cover their medications for the three things we’re walking for. And there’s a lot of depression and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and a lot of people that’s had head injuries that get dementia and Alzheimer’s and not everybody’s fully covered by the V.A. So some people need a little help along the way so that’s what we’re raising money for.”

As they hope to reach Seattle by this July, Jeff predicts that final day will be the best of his life. The brothers have both lost about 40 pounds on the journey, and have raised over $4,000 for their cause. For a link to donate for the Veterans Walk for D.A.D., visit here.
