About 20 people attended a public town hall meeting in Jefferson with U.S. Congressman Steve King Thursday.
The Republican from Kiron talked about the re-negotiated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the new agreement is called the USMCA (United States, Mexico, Canada Agreement). King said the draft of the new agreement will be available sometime in May. Meanwhile the new trade agreement with China is just about complete.
“(U.S. Trade Negotiator) Robert Lighthizer and (U.S. Treasury Secretary) Steve Mnuchin are going to China on the 30th of April to do face-to-face negotiations over there on this trade deal. And then sometime towards the middle of May, then the top Chinese negotiators are coming to the United States, so you can read that two ways. One of them is there’s not going to be an agreement with China until they get done with their travels at least (and) who knows if that gets resolved or not.”

He pointed out other trade possibilities could be with the European Union and the United Kingdom. He also talked about trying to repeal and replace Obamacare, strengthening the security at the southern border, and he touched on the Mueller report.
Attendees asked questions regarding the federal government helping farmers with low corn and soybean prices, healthcare as it relates to paying high prices for prescription medications, statutory benefits for retired members of Congress, denials from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds following the tornado in Marshalltown last year, inflation rates and the delayed process for illegal immigrants to obtain a green card. King also addressed his votes on three bills that one attendee brought up including the Yemen conflict.
The town hall in Greene County was King’s 13th of 39 county town halls he pledged to do this year.
