Junior Colby Kafer became just the twelfth Iowa high school boy to top 22 feet in the long jump this season when he went 22′ 1″ in his only attempt yesterday at the Woodward-Granger Hawk Co-ed Relays. He broke his own Greene County school record and joined a small number of Rams to jump more than 22 feet in the long history of the Jefferson-based program. Kafer and fellow junior Carter Morton took were restricted to three events instead of the usual four because of the upcoming Drake Relays and nursing minor injuries.
West Central Valley won the boys’ team title with 171 points to 170 for the Rams. W-G had 136, followed by Grand View Christian 40, Glidden-Ralston 29, and 18 for Paton-Churdan.
Morton took just one attempt in the high jump and cleared 6′ 0″ to win the event. Junior Tyler Miller won the shot put at 48′ 1/2″. Morton, Kafer, and Miller have all qualified for the Drake Relays in those field events.
The Rams won the 4 x 100 meter relay in 44:94 with junior Tyler Teeples, Morton, junior Brent Riley, and Kafer. Teeples, Riley, Kafer, and sophomore Jaxon Warnke won the 4 x 200 in 1:34.87, and the Rams won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:09.35.
