Everyone is invited to go bird watching tomorrow at a popular area in Greene County.

Jefferson bird expert and Carroll County Naturalist Matt Wetrich will be leading a field trip to the Dunbar Slough Wildlife Management Area. Wetrich says now is the perfect time to see a variety of birds on their migratory patterns through the state and Dunbar Slough is a popular place where waterfowl congregate.

“One of the best places in the state of Iowa, actually for wetland habitat (and) upland habitat. A great resource here in Greene County.”

Wetrich points out the popular waterfowl to see now is the American Pelican.

“(They have these) Big white wings with some black towards the outer edges of the feathers on the backside of the wings there. You’ll notice this giant orange bill. And this time of year they’ve got this fun little knob on top of their bill which is a sign they’re old enough for breeding. It’s kind of their ‘I’m interested, I’m available’ symbol and that will actually fall off later in the summer.”

The event is free and open to the public. Participants are to meet at the Casey’s General Store in Scranton tomorrow at 8am to travel together to Dunbar Slough. All interests and skill levels of bird watching are encouraged to attend. It is sponsored by the Big Bluestem Audubon Society, Carroll County Conservation and Whiterock Conservancy.
