It’s tax season, and while most people have April 15th on their mind for the income tax filing deadline, Dallas County Treasurer Mitch Hambleton encourages people to not forget about their property taxes.
“Taxes are actually due by March 31st. In so far as the 31st is a Sunday, taxes will be considered on time if they’re paid by Monday, April the 1st. So get them paid by the first of the month, or at least get it postmarked by the first of the month. We do look at the postmark in determining whether something is late. And I believe the late fee on that is 1.5%, so you really want to get them paid on time.”
The Iowa Department of Revenue has allowed businesses in the counties affected by the recent flood disaster proclamation to file for an extension of the property tax deadline. However, Hambleton emphasizes that the extension doesn’t include residential property taxes.
