A new wrinkle to the Greene County Early Bird Coed Track & Field Meet held on March 26 at Linduska Field in Jefferson was traveling trophies presented to each winning relay team. The Greene County boys won the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays with the same four runners (pictured l-r: Tyler Teeples, John Rosado, Brent Riley, and Colby Kafer, all juniors. The Greene County girls won the 4 x 100 with senior Melanie Doran, junior Paige Heaning, and sophomores Makala Kafer and Brianna Osterson. In all the Rams won four boys’ events and the girls won three during the meet. No team score was kept.

Boys’ head coach Chad Morton said he and girls’ head coach Derek Merk were very happy with how the meet was run. “Our volunteers were just awesome! I also have to thank Misty Bettey for all of her hard work. We absolutely could not have done it without her.” He added he thought the boys eally stepped up and ran well for the first meet. “It should be an exciting season!” One of the top athletes on the boys’ team is Carter Morton, who missed the meet due to injury. Morton has already cleared 6′ 7″ in the high jump, automatically qualifying him for next month’s Drake Relays in Des Moines.

Morton added pictures of the teams and trophies can be found on the Rams Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Greene County girls are scheduled to compete today at 4:30 p.m. at the Audubon Girls’ Early Bird Meet. The Greene County boys are set to go to Van Meter tomorrow for the Winterset Husky Invite. Winterset’s track is being worked on, so the meet has been moved to Van Meter starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
