Greene County’s high school girls’ track & field squad had a number of performances on Saturday indoors at the Buena Vista University Elite High School Meet on Saturday that head coach Derek Merk was pleased with. There were 22 teams in action with no team score kept. The Rams competed against schools both larger and smaller, along with some relatively the same size.
The highest placing event for the Rams was fifth. That came from sophomore Brooklyn Olson in the shot put at 32′ 5′-1/2″, and from the 60 meter shuttle hurdle relay team of juniors Izzy Bravard and MEgan Doran, sophomore Lily Muir, and senior Melanie Doran, in 43. 42 seconds.
Senior Janelle Brophy was seventh in the long jump at 15′ 3-1/2″, and there were two other top 10 finishes for the Rams. The distance medley relay was tenth with juniors Paige Heaning and Kassie Lamoureux, and sophomores Makala Kafer and Brianna Osterson, and Melanie Doran was tenth in the 60 meter hurdles in 10.79 seconds.
Coach Merk said he was pleased nearly everyone on the team went to the Storm Lake meet. “I felt like the girls really supported each other throughout the day. The younger girls were able to obtain some great experience. I feel like this will help us have an easier transition to the outdoor season.”
The Rams are back at it today in Ames inside the Lied Recreation Center for the Iowa State University High School girls’ meet. The ISU boys’ meet is tomorrow.
