About 50 people attended a soup supper fundraiser and met a Democratic Presidential candidate at the Churdan Public Library Friday night.

Former US Congressman John Delaney said he’s the right person for the job to be president because he believes he can unify the country. One way he plans to work with Congress is by having regular debates with them.

“So the President of the United States should go to the House of Representatives every three months for three hours on national television, and say ‘Okay first hour and a half we’re going to debate one issue (on) healthcare, climate, whatever it is. Next hour and a half is open questions, which would be the wild west. Look it, I think we’re having a little bit of an issue with truth in this country.”

As for trade talks with China, Delaney said rather than combating them alone, he would rather rally America’s allies and American businesses to put pressure on China, along with engaging them through the Trans Pacific Partnership to squeeze them into an agreement. Delaney wants to give all Americans the right to universal healthcare and for those that don’t want that as an option, the federal government can give them a credit to purchase their own healthcare.

Other topics Delaney addressed from the audience included foreign policy with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the North Korean situation, corporate tax rates, climate change, abortion, immigration and public education. Churdan was the third campaign stop for Delaney. His other two stops on Friday were in Madrid and Fort Dodge.
