The Perry High School Academic Decathlon Team competed recently at the state competition, bringing home 8th place as a unit as well as some individual accolades.

The competition was held earlier this month at Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School, and the theme for the year was “The 1960’s: A Transformational Decade.” The ten-member team each wrote an essay, performed a speech, held an interview, and were tested on their knowledge of art, music, social studies, science, economics, math, and literature. The Perry team competed in the small school division, finishing 8th, while the alternate team finished 5th in the small school alternate division.

Additionally, four of the students were individual medal winners, including seniors Camden Studer and Madison Mason, who placed first in the essay and interview categories, respectively. The other medalists were senior Krista Hines, who placed third in essay, and junior Bree Martin in the alternate division, who placed 2nd in economics, literature, and science, and 3rd in art, music, math, and essay. The team was coached by Teresa Kresse and Lisa Schumacher, and both were proud of their team’s accomplishments this year. The Perry Academic Decathlon Team included: seniors Studer, Mason, Hines, Kayla McFarland, and Devin Carrillo; juniors Martin, Alexandra Tasler, Kaylynn Bousman, and Bailey Piper; and sophomore Jocelyn Hopkins.
