The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors met for a budget session Thursday.
Two county projects were discussed: the regional airport’s runway replacement and a new county jail. The Board discussed adopting an amended and substituted agreement creating the airport authority, which would replace the original written in 1989. This discussion followed the Board approving a resolution for a $55,700 annual tax levy to help fund the runway replacement on a 3-2 vote Tuesday. The two that rejected the agreement, Mike Dickson and Cliff Carney, expressed doubts Thursday of the authority board’s commitment to use the funds from the County, Guthrie Center, and Panora for the runway. Authority Board Chair Marshall Burgess took umbrage with their concerns, “We’re not going to take money that we’re not going to use, for crying out loud. What do you think we are, a bunch of crooks? That’s what you’re making us out to be, somebody that wants money that we’re not going to use, it’s ridiculous.”
The Board then voted 3-2 approving the first reading of the creation agreement ordinance. The Board also heard a presentation from Sheriff Marty Arganbright and representatives of the Samuels Group on hiring their management services on the prebond construction phase of the jail project. The Samuels Group is asking for $5,000 to finetune cost estimates for the construction, and the Board directed the services agreement to the county attorney.
