The City of Perry and the Parks and Recreation Department are now offering a new activity twice a week at the McCreary Community Building, which involves a sport that’s growing in popularity around the country.
City Council member Barb Wolling has helped spearhead the creation of a pickleball league, which she says is a low-impact four-player sport that anyone can play. It’s essentially the combination of ping-pong, badminton, and tennis, and played on a small court in the gym. City Administrator Sven Peterson says the rules for pickleball are fairly simple, though experts will be on hand to help teach the game. “Best thing is, other than what I learned at the Council meeting, I know nothing about pickleball, so we’ll have staff from the McCreary Center come out and talk to you more about that.”
The league is free to join, though a membership at the McCreary Center is required to use their facilities, and the games take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-11 a.m. You don’t need to sign up to play, and organizers will set up as many courts as are needed.
