Perry emergency crews responded to a vehicle fire Tuesday afternoon, and were able to control the blaze before it got out of hand.

At just before 4:40 p.m., the Perry Police Dispatch received a call that a car had caught fire in the driveway of a house located at 623 Grove Street. Officers were first to arrive at the scene, and two of them utilized the fire extinguishers in their vehicles to control the flames. The Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter, and Assistant Fire Chief Brian Eiteman said the fire was extinguished within around three minutes.

Eiteman said the fire reportedly began as the driver of the 1977 Chevrolet was attempting to dislodge the vehicle from a snowbank. The exertion likely caused the car to overheat, and the engine soon caught fire. The driver smelled burning rubber and saw smoke, so they took the warning and exited the vehicle safely. No one was injured during the incident. Eiteman says the fire was isolated to the engine compartment, though the engine was completely melted and destroyed, so the car was considered a total loss.
