The Jefferson City Council met Tuesday night in regular session.
The Council approved hiring Jonathon Young as a police officer. He will start this Thursday with an annual salary of $41,516. Mayor Craig Berry proposed increasing the mayor and council member’s wages. The last increase was on January 1, 2000. Berry proposed raising the mayor’s rate from $2,400 to $4,800 and council member’s rate from $30 to $60 per meeting. The proposal would need to be considered by wage and benefit commission first.
The Council then heard a presentation of projects from Janice Gammon with the Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway and Corridor Management Plan. Some proposed projects include “Greening the Lincoln” with making businesses more environmentally sustainable, doing an oral history project with students, submitted a letter of support for the east entryway project and having two re-enactments of the 1919 military convoys coming through the county on the Lincoln Highway.
The meeting ended with a quarterly report with Jefferson Matters: Main Street. The Council agreed to pay $9,300 to purchase LED snowflakes for winter decorations to be hung on the light poles around the square. JMMS will also help with the Amazing Race for Charity on September 7th with money raised to go toward the new animal shelter and artist Tony Sims has been selected to do the fourth Roof Top Art project on top of Unger Insurance. As for the investment drive, JMMS is at $42,000 of their $69,000 goal.
