With the possibility of ice and blowing snow happening today, black ice might become an issue on the road.
With that in mind, Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams cautions motorists to refrain from using their cruise control when traveling on the roads in those conditions.
“The cruise control when you hit black ice is going to cause your tires to spin, which in turn causes the car to slide and then you panic, hit the brakes and make it worse, or you hit the gas and make it worse. So just don’t use your cruise control. Just try to keep a steady speed and of course slow down. If you notice that there’s freezing rain or drizzle, or there has been, slow down so that you don’t have as much risk when you do hit black ice.”
Williams points out black ice can be most problematic on bridges. He notes state and county crews do a fantastic job of applying materials to those structures, but they still are areas to watch out for black ice to form.
“So just make sure that you are paying attention when you come up to the bridges especially the overpasses and definitely the Jefferson overpass because we have had a lot of cars spin out just trying to get up it when it’s slick out.”
A wintry mix and blowing snow are expected throughout the day today.
