Opportunities for a Greene County girls’ basketball victory this season are running a bit on the short side. The Rams host the Saydel Eagles tonight in the middle school gym in Jefferson in the first game of a girl/boy doubleheader. The Rams are 0-17 and the Eagles are 1-16 with their lone win over Greene County on Jan. 4 in Des Moines. The Rams are hoping the home court and home team fans will help them get in the victory column and break a 25 game losing streak that extends to the final eight games of last season.
The Greene County boys snapped a six-game losing streak on Monday of this week in Panora vs. Panorama when they beat the Panthers, 83-69. Coach Chris Nelson’s Rams are 6-12 overall and 3-8 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference games. The Eagles have three wins on the season, but all are outside the conference. The Rams were missing more than one starter and had others in foul trouble in the first meeting with Saydel, but Greene County managed a 79-74 overtime win in the first meeting.
Both games can be heard tonight on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at six o’clock and the boys to follow. Tonight marks the final home games for the Rams and it’s Senior Night. The girls have no seniors on the team and Trey Hinote is the lone senior on the boys’ team.
Both Greene County teams play four times in the next five days because after tonight, it’s at Carroll High Saturday, at Story City vs. Roland-Story Monday in make up action, and in Alleman on Tuesday vs. North Polk to end the regular season.
