Recent winter precipitation and freezing temperatures have left ice on much of area sidewalks and other pavement in Guthrie County, which can mean a risk for falling and serious injury.
Guthrie County Hospital Physical Therapist Jessica Carney urges people, especially those elderly, to be mindful of slick pavement when walking outside this winter. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one out of four older people fall each year, and one out of five falls causes serious injuries such as broken bones or a head injury.
Carney advises everyone to not go outside during severe winter weather conditions unless they have to, and she gives these tips for staying upright outside, “Never try to take a big jump and leap or step over a patch of ice or anything like that. You know just take your time, be aware of the other people around you as well to make sure someone’s not going to rush into you or fall in front of you. So just take your time and use common sense and be cautious, use handrails if they are available, those kind of safety tips.”
Carney urges people to also dress warmly outside, and wear shoes with good traction.
