For the second night in a row in the middle school gym in Jefferson, the visiting team won both games of a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girl/boy doubleheader. Thursday it was South Hamilton (Jewell) and Friday was PCM’s night. The Mustangs pulled away in the second half of both games to win 51-35 on the girls’ side and 73-56 in the boys’ game. The twin bill was broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The PCM girls improved t0 6-10 overall and 4-6 in the conference while the Rams fell to 0-16 and 0-11. The game saw the Rams reach a season high in points scored and they were as close to an opponent at the end of the third quarter (down 39-31) as they’ve been in any game this season. Regan Freland led PCM with 27 points including four goals from three-point range. The second quarter saw the junior eclipse 1,000 points for her career. The Rams had a career high 12 points from sophomore Lily Muir, who went two of four on three-point shots after making just four from deep all season.
The Rams led 33-32 at halftime, then were out scored 41-23 in the second half. The Mustangs made 14 three-pointers to eight for the Rams. Andrew Van Ryswyk had seven three’s and 22 points. Reed Worth scored 15 of his 18 points after halftime and Derek Brown went 10 above his average and finished with 17. Greene County had 20 points from Trey Hinote and 14 from Tyler Miller. A 12-0 to open the fourth quarter took the PCM lead from 49-47 to 61-47 and the Rams never threatened after that. The Rams have lost six in a row and nine of 10 and are 5-12 overall and 3-8 in the HOIAC. PCM stayed in the conference race with the win and is 8-2 in the league and 9-6 overall.
