The Perry School District recently commemorated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a special program at the high school.

Monday afternoon, Mark Stringer, the Director of the Iowa Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), spoke with students about the importance of remembering Dr. King’s legacy. He went over the accomplishments of the famous civil rights activist, and discussed how his teachings can be applied to society today. Following the presentation, students were able to talk to Stringer. Many discussed how they felt King’s message is particularly important in light of the nation’s current concerns regarding immigration.

The program was organized by Perry High School History Teacher Gary Overla, who commented on the importance of including all people in the fight for equality, because he believes, like Dr. King, that true civil rights can only be achieved if people work together.
