With wind chills as low as 20 below zero today through tomorrow, Greene County Public Health officials have several safety tips to keep in mind if you are going to be outdoors.

Public Health Director Becky Wolf offers these reminders when temperatures drop below zero. “Covering your head because that’s the largest surface area of your body and that’s where you will lose most of your body heat. Keep all of the skin surfaces covered up. Have a scarf over your face or a covering over your mouth and nose so that you have warm air coming in when you’re breathing.”

Wolf also recommends wearing multiple layers of clothing when you are outside.

“Dress in layers so that when you get too warm, you can peel off a layer if you start sweating. And then when you get inside the house, get dry clothes back on.”

Wolf adds that by getting dry clothes on, you prevent yourself from getting cold from wearing the sweaty clothes from being outdoors. She notes that there’s no recommended time limit for individuals to be outside in extremely cold temperatures, only to be aware of signs and symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite.
