snow plows

The roads around Dallas County are mostly clear after recent snow storms, but motorists are still reminded to take care while travelling the rest of the winter.

One particular hazard people need to be mindful of is black ice, especially as the weather remains cold. Black ice appears to simply be wet spots on the road, but frequently causes vehicles to lose traction and slide. Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard says you can mostly avoid the ill effects of black ice by driving at a reasonable speed for the conditions. However, if you do find yourself losing control, he reminds you to turn your steering wheel in the direction of the skid. Leonard also emphasizes the importance of making sure your car is properly maintained, and that you have a winter survival kit in the vehicle.

There’s also the possibility of more snow this week, and if that happens, Dallas County Engineer Al Miller reminds motorists to be mindful of workers attempting to clear the roads. “If at all possible, please be aware of our folks. If you come up behind one of our plows, we generally operate at 25-30 miles-an-hour. Leave early, drive slow, and be mindful of our pavement conditions. You know, we’re trying to do our best to provide safe roads, and we need the help of everybody that’s travelling our roads to slow down and be mindful of the road conditions.”
