The City of Jamaica is facing governmental changes after their Mayor was arrested on several drug-related charges last week.
According to Jamaica City Council Member and Mayor Pro-Tem Tim McDermott, Mayor LaDonna Kennedy has submitted her letter of resignation, after the Guthrie County Sheriff’s office executed a search warrant and found 18 marijuana plants in her house, as well as packaged marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and unlabeled prescription medicine on January 16th. LaDonna and her husband Randy were both arrested and charged with two counts of failure to affix a drug stamp; class D felonies; manufacture with intent to deliver no more than 50 kilograms of marijuana, an aggravated misdemeanor; one count of knowingly keeping a dwelling for possessing or selling a controlled substance, an aggravated misdemeanor; possession of a controlled substance – first offense, a serious misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.
Court documents show that LaDonna and Randy waived a preliminary hearing and were released from the Guthrie County Jail on their own recognizance on January 17th. Randy filed a plea of not guilty Monday. Information has not been released on when LaDonna’s resignation is made effective, and the Jamaica City Council has not met since her arrest. Their next scheduled meeting is on February 11th. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
