acgcThe ACGC basketball teams are still looking for their first victories of the new year. They will have another opportunity to do just that with a West Central Activities Conference doubleheader tonight against the Madrid Tigers.

The Chargers split the home double last November. Sophomore Kylie Young notched a career high 14 points in the 50-42 victory over the Tigers. Head coach Dan Baker pointed out another sophomore that will be key to getting the season sweep. “We cannot get in a situation where we have Jorja Hoover, our point guard, on the bench in foul trouble in both (the) first half and the second half. We have to have her on the floor. Our offense runs a lot smoother and she just seems to pick up our intensity all over the floor.”

The Chargers held a 13-2 lead after the first quarter and never relinquished the scoring advantage in the conference opener. Since dropping five of their first six games, the Tigers have won three of the last four. Though of their four wins this season, only one has come at home.

The Madrid boys took the conference opener handedly in Guthrie Center with an 88-48 thumping. Junior Braden Gibbons was once again spectacular for the Tigers, recording a triple-double enroute to the victory. Despite an 8-2 overall record, the Tigers sit in a tie for third place in the conference with Earlham and are two games behind the undefeated Van Meter Bulldogs.

Senior Noah Nelsen led all Chargers in that opening night loss with eleven points while Bryce Littler added ten for the gold and black. You can hear the game live on KKRF2 and RaccoonValleyRadio.com with pre-game coverage set for 5:45pm from the Madrid High School gymnasium.
