Chelsi Wilkens stands out on the Greene County High School volleyball team not just because she’s tall (6’0″), but because she’s the only senior among 11 juniors on Coach Donna Carhill’s varsity. The former East Greene student is now in her second season playing for Greene County. She and her teammates have been practicing since August 12, but the season opener remains five days away as the Rams won’t open until Sept. 10 at Collins-Maxwell-Baxter. The first home match is Sept. 12 in the middle school gym in Jefferson vs. Colfax-Mingo. Wilkens talked about all that practice and said, “Hopefully, practice will lead to a good start. Everyone’s excited for the season to begin. It seems like we’ve been waiting forever to play a game. Hopefully, we’re ready.”
Wilkens said as a senior she’s supposed to be a leader. “I’m quiet, so it’s kind of hard.” She added she thinks this team will be strong in the areas of setting and hitting and she and the other players are looking forward to the 2013 season after last season when the Rams were 10-18 in matches. “I think we’ll be pretty good this year. We’ve been together two years, we talk, and I think we can have a good year.”
