It’s all about staying cool this week as we all try to brave this late August heat wave.

Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf recently told us you can put a frozen bottle of water in front of a fan to cool the air circulating throughout your home.

Kempf has some additional tips that are easy to follow and can further help you stay cool.

“Keep the curtains pulled on the sunny side of the house to just help keep that sun out of the house.  If you’re gonna run a fan in the window, have the fan blowing out instead of blowing in in the afternoon.  In the morning and the evening, have it blowing in; during the heat of the day, have it blowing out so that you can not try and pull any more heat into your home than what you have to.”

Kempf adds that avoiding use of the oven and waiting until the evening to do laundry can also help keep heat and humidity out of the house.

Kempf says there are many other little things we can do to stay cool too, but the easiest pointer to follow: keep the lights turned off.
