Public health offices across Iowa continue to report confirmed cases of the Cyclospora infection, but it appears the numbers are now decreasing.

The Cyclospora infection comes from parasite contaminated food and causes symptoms such as diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and muscle aches.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health the state hygienic lab has confirmed 3 cyclospora cases in Dallas County.

Experts believe fresh produce is to blame for the outbreak but believe the ill people consumed the contaminated food in mid-June, meaning it’s likely the number of cases will continue to decrease.

Cyclospora can only be detected through specific laboratory testing and special treatment is available, including antibiotics.  Symptoms last an average of 57 days if untreated.

To prevent potential infection, always wash fresh produce thoroughly before eating.  If you believe you may have Cyclospora, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
