There are just two seniors on the Greene County High School boys’ basketball team, but can those two ever score points. Trey Hinote and Lance Hughes have always been able to put points on the board, but the “H & H boys” are both averaging more than 20 points per game. If they’re able to sustain that pace for a whole season, it would mark one of the few times in the history of Jefferson-based boys’ basketball that’s happened.

Hughes has played in all 10 games for the 4-6 Rams and is averaging 21.2 points per game. He’s on a streak of scoring 20 or more points in the last six games and that includes 30 points in a win vs. North Polk (Alleman) and 33 in a loss to Nevada. He’s making 51% of field goal attempts and shooting nearly 72% from the free throw line.

Hinote has shot the ball well despite two separate ankle injuries. His right ankle was severely sprained Nov. 30 early in a road loss to South Hamilton. He missed all but three minutes of that game, and all of the next three contests. He played the next two games without incident, then went down with a left ankle sprain on Dec. 18 vs. Nevada and missed the final nine minutes. He was in the lineup for Friday’s night’s 84-75 home loss to Boone and scored 20 points, 19 coming in the second half. The Dordt College (Sioux Center) recruit is averaging 20.4 points, and 22.8 if you take out the SH game in which he barely played due to injury.

Greene County next plays Saydel in Des Moines as part of a girl/boy doubleheader on Jan. 4. Those games will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
