The ACGC girls basketball team found themselves trailing by eleven as they headed into the fourth quarter in Ogden Friday night. The gold and black found their gear with just enough time on the clock, as they outscored the home squad 15-4 in the fourth, including a late three pointer by Kylie Young, to send the game to overtime. In the extra session, the Chargers pulled away to win 46-41 and improve to 4-1 overall.
Head coach Dan Baker credits the defensive intensity down the stretch as the key to the program’s first overtime victory. “I knew we could come back. I knew we could start shooting the ball better. But man-to-man defense tonight, our man-to-man defense was outstanding. I told them after the game we’ll probably start playing more man-to-man because they really did show capability tonight.”
Junior Kennedy Young notched another career high with 13 points to lead all Chargers. Sophomore Jorja Hoover added nine while senior Jadeyn Carrick and freshman Chloe Largent chipped in eight each to help equal the number of conference wins they tallied last season.
The ACGC boys couldn’t find the same magic as the Ogden boys thumped the gold and black, 81-53. Junior Bryce Littler led all Chargers with 13, while Noah Nelsen continued his double-digit streak, adding 12. Ogden senior Ben Heeren led all scores with 21 points, while two other Bulldogs reached double figures.
The Chargers have now dropped 20 straight contests, tied for the longest active mark in Class 2A. Both teams will continue conference play Tuesday as they clash with the Earlham Cardinals.
