It’s game five for both Greene County varsity basketball teams, and the third night of action in the middle school gym in Jefferson. The North Polk (Alleman) Comets visit tonight with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow. Coverage of the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference doubleheader on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com begins at 5:45 p.m.
The North Polk girls are ranked first in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Comets are 4-1 and their only loss is to Class 5A top 10 ranked Johnston. They rolled to four straight victories since losing to the Dragons. The Greene County girls are 0-4 and are averaging 25 points per game.
Greene County’s boys are playing without leading scorer Trey Hinote. The senior shooting guard suffered a severe ankle injury last Friday night in Jewell vs. Class 2A fifth ranked South Hamilton. Hinote missed most of that game, and all of Tuesday night’s home loss to unbeaten Gilbert. Coach Chris Nelson’s Rams are 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference. NP is 0-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play, but the Comets are a senior dominated team.
