The Greene County School Board met Monday night for their November meeting.
The meeting began with the Board approving to continue the instructional support levy for another five years following a public hearing. The levy provided $671,000 to the district this year to supplement the general fund. The next five year period will go into effect starting July 1, 2020.
Under old business, the Board approved to move forward with implementing the Watch Dads Of Great Students (D.O.G.S.) program. It will allow for adult male volunteers to go into the elementary and middle schools to help teachers during the school day and provide an extra set of eyes in the building. The Board approved the program, pending financial payment for background checks.
The Board then approved several fundraising requests as presented, a School Budget Review Committee request for open enrolled out students as well as English Language Learner students, the winter athletic officials list, several board policy reviews, and a 2019-2020 physical education exemption waiver so that students can take PE two out of three trimesters for the next school year. Additionally, the Board approved the voluntary retirement policy for this school year, the 2018-19 School Improvement Advisory Committee appointments as presented, and purchasing a $12,500 cooling unit for the district server room due to the current unit failing earlier this school year.
The Board also set public hearings for their December meeting for a 2018-19 budget amendment to add additional funds from Bringing Opportunity and Optimism to Students and Teachers (BOOST) and additional costs to the school building project, as well as a public hearing on putting out bids to demolish the Grand Junction school building.
Finally, Superintendent Tim Christensen said that the School Foundation Committee received a $912,118 donation from the Floyd/Dunlop estate to be used for student scholarships.
