A Greene County High School student will be returning to the Iowa High School Music Association’s All-State Music Festival this weekend.
Junior Jacob Hansen is a two-time qualifier as a tenor. The last time he made it to all-state was his freshman year. He shares his thoughts on comparing the audition process and making it two different times to all-state.
“My freshman year I was of course inexperienced, it was my first year of ever doing it, and I had a group of very talented singers. So (I) just kind of doubts about whether or not I deserve to make it in. And then that kind of solidified those doubts sophomore year. I don’t know, I bombed it last year, so maybe I wasn’t good enough. But this year it just feels really good to know that I made it in. I had a fantastic group, but I made it in knowing that I proved myself twice.”
Hansen says the audition process is “cut-throat” at times, but he has advice for those looking to go out for all-state in the future.
“My number one piece of advice would be to make an impression on the judge. You can be good all you want, but if you’re not making yourself stand out and doing things to differ yourself from the rest of the crowd then there’s not a great chance that you’re going to make it in.”
The public concert will be held on the Iowa State University campus in Ames this Saturday.
