Supervisors canvassing votes Tuesday afternoon

Following the canvass of votes by the Greene County Board of Supervisors, a formal request was made for a recount for County Treasurer.

Earlier in the day, an Absentee Voter Special Precinct Committee decided to allow one of five outstanding ballots to be counted toward the unofficial results from last Tuesday’s general election, which brought the contested race for Greene County Treasurer to two votes in favor of Republican challenger Katlynn Gannon-Mechaelsen. She officially defeated Democrat incumbent Donna Lawson 2,026 to 2,024 votes. However, Lawson presented a letter to the Board requesting a recount following this afternoon’s canvass.

Lawson has appointed Greene County Democratic Party Chair Chris Henning as her representative and Mechaelsen has appointed Greene County Republican Party Treasurer Sean Sebourn as her representative to do the recount. Both Henning and Sebourn have to choose a third representative. Lawson has also chosen to do both a hand and a machine recount.

The Supervisors will meet this Thursday at 8am make a resolution for the recount and County Deputy Auditor Billie Hoskins noted that the recount must take place before the state’s canvass of votes happens on November 26th.
