The Jefferson Municipal Swimming Pool is getting a couple of new improvements to extend the life of the aging structure.
The City Council recently approved a PVC liner to be installed in the almost 80-year-old pool, for $86,517. City Administrator Mike Palmer points out that there has been continued issues with maintaining the pool over the years with paint not adhering to the structure, having to grind down rough spots, and even paint chipping off the bottom of the pool. He says by installing a PVC liner, it not only gives the City a long-term solution, but it also includes an extended warranty as well.
Palmer adds that the Council will also consider approving at their meeting next week the installation of a cover over the pool as well.
“It’s kind of a pervious cover, almost like a screen cover. It allows the rain to go through and snow to sit on it, and melt, and go down to the pool. But it keeps the leaves and the critters out. All of us believe that that’s what keeps the liner lasting even longer.”
The initial quote for the cover was from ACCO and it was for $21,570, with a $6,330 installation fee. The liner bid was also from ACCO, but it will be installed by RenoSys. Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Vicky Lautner says there is an $11,250 credit from ACCO, due to their commitment of repainting the pool that they are no longer going to do, and she will use it as part of the payment for the liner project. Payment for the liner would come from the general fund and then it could potentially be applied to a future bond project to have the funds be recouped later.
The liner could still be installed sometime later this fall.
