The ACGC football team will compete in their final game this season on Friday at Mt. Ayr against the Raiders. While there won’t be a playoff spot on the line, there will be plenty of team and personal achievements to play for. Those are highlighted by what could be the first 1,000-yard rushing season in program history. Senior Ben Kingery is just 149 yards away from eclipsing the mark.
Kingery has had a dominant season toting the pigskin, registering 851 yards on 169 carries. In addition to already holding the single-season marks, Kingery has the most yards and attempts in a game with 182 yards against Clarinda and 28 attempts at Woodward Academy. Classmate Gabe Rowley also has a chance to get to 500 yards on the season, needing just 77 on Friday.
In his postgame comments, head coach Cody Matthewson touted Kingery and Rowley’s resiliency through recent injuries.
“With Ben and Gabe, they’re both banged up. Gabe had a hip flexor issue and we sat him out a couple days. Then he comes back and he kind of banged up his ankle and he continued to fight through it. Ben was cramping up a little bit. He said his knee felt pretty good (though). But to have the night that those guys had on both sides of the ball and to fight and be resilient through injuries, I think that speaks volumes of where this program is (going).”
As a team the gold and black are 13th in Class 1A in team rushing with a total of 1,783 yards. The team has also collected 14 rushing touchdowns, led by Kingery with 5. The Mt. Ayr defense will certainly put achieving those marks to the test as they allow just 160 total rushing yards per game.
