Guthrie County is on the national stage in the fight against cancer.

Following the Guthrie County Relay for Life organization’s annual event held last June, Senior Community Development Manager with the American Cancer Society Kim Durst is proud to announce Guthrie County is ranked ninth in the nation for the amount of dollars raised per capita with about $65,500 raised this year. Despite challenges with the heat this year and relocating the Relay for Life event indoors, Durst says residents came out to raise funds for cancer research, “This is a big deal. Guthrie County really comes out and shows incredible support for the cancer survivors right here in rural Iowa and you know they’re making a difference in the fight against cancer, not only locally but across the nation.”

Durst credits Guthrie County’s commitment to fundraising year round with a variety of events to involve different community members. She also congratulated three local teams that each raised over $5,000; Angels for Life, Mel’s Breast Friends, and Team Wichita. Six teams have already registered for next year’s Guthrie County Relay for Life event taking place June 14, 2019 at Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center High School.
