Local high school students interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy have the opportunity to apply for a nomination from one of Iowa’s US Senators or House Representatives.
The deadline to apply for a nomination from Senator Chuck Grassley is October 12th. Grassley nominates 10 Iowans each year to each of the academies including the Military Academy at West Point, the Air Force Academy, the Naval Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy. Students are encouraged to consider applying to all of the academies because each one has different qualifications and a student who may be medically disqualified for one academy may be eligible for another. Grassley asks for a letter of recommendation from their school guidance counselor or administrator, a high school transcript, letter of recommendation from a teacher, two letters of recommendation from Iowans, and their ACT score.
